New Study: A Roadmap to National Green Hydrogen Standards in Namibia

The international standards landscape for green hydrogen is comprehensive, and these standards play a crucial role in ensuring safety, reliability, efficiency, and sustainability in hydrogen technologies while promoting global trade and investment. This scoping study was commissioned to assess the current status, gaps, and opportunities related to technical standards and sustainability certification for green hydrogen in Namibia. It aims to evaluate Namibia’s existing frameworks against international benchmarks and provide strategic recommendations to strengthen the country’s quality infrastructure for green hydrogen.

Part I of the study focuses mainly on assessing the international landscape of technical standards and sustainability certification, comparing Namibia’s current standards with global best practices, identifying key gaps and opportunities, and offering recommendations to enhance Namibia’s capabilities in standardisation. Particular emphasis is placed on technical standards for green hydrogen, sustainability certification, and the role of the National Standards Institute (NSI) in supporting the development of a robust hydrogen economy.

Part II of the study builds on the insights, findings, and recommendations from the Scoping Study and outlines the necessary steps and strategic initiatives that NSI should drive in order to effectively contribute to Namibia’s hydrogen sector.
